when this monogram is used for an individual, the letter is the initial of the first name.  when used for a couple or family, the letter is the initial of the last name.

two letter monograms

when this monogram is used for an individual, the two letters are the initials of the first and last names. when used for a couple, the two letters should be the initials of each person's first name.

three letter monogram with larger center letter

when this monogram is used for an individual, the center letter is the initial of the last name.  the letter on the left is the initial of the first name.  the letter on the right is the initial of the middle name. when used for a married couple, the center letter is the initial of the last name, the wife's initial is on the left and the husband's initial is on the right.
